Coastal transit centre

Semporna is a coastal commercial centre on the eastern edge of the Semporna Peninsula, 60 to 90 minutes by road from Tawau Airport. A night in town connects a late flight with a morning boat to Mataking, Pom Pom or the other islands.

Semporna is a coastal commercial centre on the eastern edge of the Semporna Peninsula. It is the mainland departure point for boats to the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Sipadan and the outer islands. The streets are a dense grid of dive shops, seafood restaurants and budget hotels all leading down to the water. Mataking and Pom Pom offer island resort stays with spas and beach villas. Mataking borders the 100-metre deep Alice Channel and limits its capacity to roughly 100 guests. Pom Pom operates a sea turtle hatchery and serves as the base for the Tropical Research and Conservation Centre. You stay in Semporna to reach these places.

The waterfront is a working harbour filled with speedboats and fishing vessels. You will see stateless Bajau Laut people in traditional longboats navigating the shallows between the piers. The Bajau Laut are a traditionally nomadic maritime community who rely heavily on subsistence fishing. You will see them in the harbour and around the islands. Unsolicited photography is inappropriate and guides will not facilitate donation drops from boats.

The town is heavily policed as part of the Eastern Sabah Security Zone which means you will see a visible security presence. This is normal and keeps the region stable. All foreign nationals must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card prior to arrival to avoid check-in friction at hotels.

You stay here to connect your flight with your island boat. A night in Semporna prevents a delayed flight from ruining the start of your luxury island stay. It is also the base for divers who want to dive Sipadan and the surrounding reefs without paying the premium for an overwater resort on Mabul or Kapalai.

The commercial jetties

The Seafest Jetty and the Semporna Ocean Tourism Centre are the primary launch points for the islands. They sit side by side on the main waterfront. When you arrive in the morning, the piers bustle with dive groups loading tanks and waterproof bags onto speedboats.

Transits to the outer islands run to a strict schedule. The speedboat ride from the Semporna jetty to Mataking takes about 40 minutes. Pom Pom takes 45 minutes and the journey to Bohey Dulang in the Tun Sakaran Marine Park also requires 45 minutes. Mabul is roughly 45 minutes away as well.

The military enforces a rigid sea curfew from 6pm to 6am. Every transfer, day trip and dive boat must be secured at a dock by late afternoon. There are no sunset yacht cruises between the islands and if you miss the afternoon resort transfer you are staying in Semporna for the night.

Transit hotels for an early boat

Seafest Regency offers modern sea-facing rooms for a comfortable night before your boat. The hotels put you close to the jetties for an early departure with your dive gear. The team books hotels with clean beds, reliable air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.

If you want modern aesthetics and a balcony, Seafest Regency is the right choice. It is the newest wing of the Seafest Group and sits directly adjacent to the Seafest Jetty. Your transfer to the boat takes 2 minutes. Every room faces the sea. The property enforces strict access rules for its swimming pool and it has a modern fitness centre. The sunrise and sunset balcony rooms give you space to sort your gear. The property caters well to families and features a dedicated children's playroom and children's pool.

The original Seafest Hotel is the established business-class transit hub. It has 143 rooms and an expansive footprint that includes a swimming pool, a sauna and a fitness centre. The 63 m² suites give you space to sort bulky underwater photography rigs. Breakfast is included and you are right next to the jetty.

Sipadan Inn 2 is a comfortable mid-tier option directly on the waterfront promenade. It has an elevator which saves you hauling Pelican cases up the stairs. Many rooms feature balconies looking out over the boat traffic. Sipadan Inn 2 suits arrivals before its reception closes at 10pm; the team checks your flight and transfer times when you book. This suits travellers arriving earlier in the day.

When Sipadan Inn 2 is full, Sipadan Inn 3 is a reliable alternative in the same area. It also has an elevator and sea-view rooms facing the promenade. Sipadan Inn 1 operates 32 rooms in the commercial centre. The rooms are compact and the building has stairs rather than an elevator. If you travel with heavy Pelican cases of underwater gear, Sipadan Inn 2 or 3 are the ones to choose.

Grace Hotel Semporna is a central option about 320 m from the city centre. It offers air-conditioned rooms with en-suite facilities. The property is strictly smoke-free. Chinese guests praise its location just a few minutes from the fishing port, the snorkelling meeting points and the fish market. If you want seafood restaurants close to your room, this is a sensible choice.

For a unique transit night, Dragon Inn Floating Resort is built entirely on stilts over the shallow waters of Semporna Bay. The architecture mirrors a traditional Bajau water village with wooden walkways connecting the chalets. It has 68 physical units and its own private jetty. The private rooms are air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms. Guests praise the atmosphere of sleeping above the water and fishing from the wooden walkways. The resort is a 10-minute walk back from the commercial centre.

Waterfront seafood restaurants

You eat seafood in Semporna. The town is famous across Malaysia for the freshness and variety of its catch which comes straight off the boats. The waterfront is lined with open-air seafood restaurants where you pick your fish, crabs or prawns from live tanks and tell the kitchen how you want them cooked. The Chinese tourist market drives much of the restaurant trade so you will find excellent steamed fish and spicy crab dishes.

The main fish market operates near the public jetty. It is a loud, wet and intensely photogenic place where you can watch the morning catch being unloaded and auctioned. If you stay at a central hotel like the Seafest, the market is a short walk away. Breakfast is included at Seafest Hotel and Seafest Regency but for dinner you should walk the promenade and choose a tank.

Nights in Semporna

For most travellers passing through, 1 night is enough.

If you are heading to a luxury resort on Mataking, Pom Pom or Kapalai, you use Semporna solely to bridge the gap between your flight and the morning boat. You arrive, sleep, have breakfast and leave.

If you want to keep costs down while diving the islands on day trips, you might stay 3 or 4 nights. This allows you to dive the Tun Sakaran Marine Park or Mabul by day while paying mainland prices for your bed and meals.

Road routes to Semporna

You fly into Tawau Airport for Semporna. The airport sits 58 kilometres west of the town and the drive takes 60 to 90 minutes. You cover the distance by pre-arranged private transport or by joining a shared minivan transfer.

If you are travelling from the rainforest there are no commercial flights between Lahad Datu and Tawau. The overland drive from Lahad Datu to Semporna takes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours. If you leave Borneo Rainforest Lodge after breakfast, you can reach Semporna by 2pm; the lodge's construction and expansion period runs from 1 January 2025 to 22 January 2027. This slots you directly onto the afternoon speedboat to your island without spending a night in town.

Diving and flying require planning. Allow 24 hours between your last dive and a flight out of Tawau.
