Best Time to Visit Sabah

Sabah has no single dry season and the east and west coasts run on opposite calendars. The best time to go depends on whether you are diving, climbing or exploring the rainforest.

The short version

Rainfall across the lowlands

Sabah sits in the equatorial doldrums and operates on two opposite weather systems across its eastern and western coasts. The peak season between March and October brings the calmest seas for diving and the lowest river levels for wildlife watching. Expect rain in every month, but you will find the trails much easier to walk outside the heavy downpours of the green season.

Yes. The answer depends entirely on where you go. Sabah has no single dry season. Rain falls in every month at every meteorological station. What the travel industry calls the less wet months refers to months with statistically lower precipitation where rain arrives in sharp late-afternoon squalls rather than sustained deluges. The temperature remains stable across the lowlands with an overall seasonal variance of less than 2 °C.

Plan your Sabah trip around how rain changes the trails and river levels rather than seasonal temperature changes. If you spend time on the east coast, getting around is easiest between April and August. If you focus on Kota Kinabalu, you will find the clearest skies between February and April.

The two coastal weather systems

Sabah's weather follows 2 major monsoon systems. The Northeast Monsoon runs from November to March. It sweeps across the South China Sea and releases heavy prolonged rainfall on the eastern and northern coastlines. The Southwest Monsoon operates from late May to September. It brings intense short-lived thunderstorms to the west coast.

The transition periods in April to May and October to November trigger severe afternoon thunderstorms. These are highly localised but drop immense volumes of water in brief windows. The baseline precipitation is highly susceptible to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation. A moderate to strong El Nino event severely suppresses rainfall across Sabah. The resulting extreme drought increases the risk of forest fires. La Nina conditions enhance atmospheric instability and result in wetter seasons.

The baseline climate is shifting. State-wide data from the Malaysian Meteorological Department indicates an overall warming trend of 0.15 °C per decade since 1969. The nighttime temperatures present a significant exception. Sabah's minimum temperatures are rising at 0.30 °C per decade. This ambient warming increases the atmosphere's moisture-holding capacity and leads to heavier precipitation extremes. Official government projections anticipate Sabah will be 0.8 °C to 1.0 °C warmer by 2030 compared with the 1970–2000 baseline.

Danum Valley and inland reserves

Danum Valley is a 438 km² Class I Protection Forest Reserve managed by Yayasan Sabah. The forest was never logged and the research station opened in 1986. The Danum Valley Study Centre records 2,849 mm of rain a year with a mean temperature of 26.9 °C. January is the wettest month with about 315 mm of rain. April is the driest month with about 156 mm. Rain falls all year and never closes the forest.

What changes is the trail mud and the river level. The green season brings intense humidity and rapid rises in the Segama River. Heavy storms wash more sediment into the rivers and turn the clear waters opaque brown. April to August offers the easiest conditions for hiking within the peak season that runs roughly from March to October. Published research from the South East Asia Rainforest Research Partnership confirms that unsurfaced roads experience significant runoff and degradation during the heaviest rains. The 80-kilometre unpaved logging road connecting Lahad Datu to the conservation area is rougher in January.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge has 31 chalets and villas spread along boardwalks under the trees. A construction and expansion project runs 1 January 2025 to 22 January 2027 and adds 9 chalets. Travel and health insurance is advised for any visit to Danum Valley. Cover that includes emergency evacuation is sensible in a place this remote. Permits are arranged with your stay.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve sits northeast of Lahad Datu and receives around 2,800 mm of rain a year. Heavy rain in December and January floods the low-lying ground. The access roads winding into the reserve are susceptible to deep mud during December and January. Utan Rainforest Lodge sits in the Sungai Kapur Virgin Jungle Reserve just outside Tabin's boundary. It has 14 rooms and operates the Bornean ground-cuckoo hide.

The Kinabatangan floodplain

Sandakan and the Kinabatangan River receive 3,220 mm of rain across about 155 rainy days a year. December is the wettest month with about 449 mm. May is the driest month with under 150 mm. The floodplain drains the interior mountains so river levels and flooding decide what a river cruise is like.

High water during the Northeast Monsoon allows small motorised skiffs to penetrate deep into narrow tributaries and isolated oxbow lakes like Danau Pitas. During the wettest months, deep flooding makes jungle trails at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and around the river lodges hazardous and can restrict access. The canopy walkway at the Rainforest Discovery Centre remains open but requires caution on the slippery steel treads. Photography is frequently compromised by low light under heavy cloud cover.

When the water drops between March and October, the wide grassy banks are exposed. This draws wildlife out of the dense forest interior and down to the water's edge. The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary supports an isolated sub-population of approximately 300 Bornean elephants. The elephants move in response to the terrain and changing water levels. Extreme high water forces elephant herds out of the low-lying swamps and onto higher ridges. This occasionally clusters them near human settlements. In the less rainy months, exposed grassy banks make feeding elephants easier to watch from the boats.

The Gomantong Caves host hundreds of thousands of wrinkle-lipped free-tailed bats. They spiral out of the Simud Putih and Simud Hitam cave mouths every evening. This massive concentration of prey attracts Bat Hawks and Peregrine Falcons. This spectacle is biologically consistent year-round but heavy seasonal rains can delay or suppress the bat exodus. The state-mandated harvest windows for edible swiftlet nests typically run from February to April and July to September.

Kota Kinabalu city

Kota Kinabalu operates on a completely different precipitation cycle. The west coast receives 2,718 mm of rain across about 147 rainy days a year. February is the driest month with about 78 mm of rain. October is the wettest month with about 387 mm across 18 days. The west coast is shielded from the worst impacts of the Northeast Monsoon by the Crocker Range.

The Southwest Monsoon from June to September is highly active here. Typhoons tracking north of Borneo pull massive amounts of moisture across the sea. This generates severe rapid-onset squall lines that lash the coast. Mornings are generally the best time to visit the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park throughout the year. Afternoon return crossings during the summer can result in violently choppy boat rides and sudden cancellations by the port authority.

The urban heat island effect exacerbates baseline warming in Kota Kinabalu. Universal Thermal Climate Index levels occasionally reach 49.8 °C during peak dry season anomalies. The temperature swing between dawn and mid-afternoon is large so midday walking is oppressive. Urban touring is best managed by planning indoor activities after 3pm to avoid both peak heat and the inevitable afternoon deluge. February to April is the best time for city walking and island hopping.

Mount Kinabalu climbing conditions

Weather on Mount Kinabalu changes with your altitude. Park HQ at 1,560 m runs about 23.8 °C by day and 15.4 °C at night. Altitude rather than season is what visitors feel. The temperature drops roughly 0.55 °C for every 100 m you climb. Summit temperatures range from 0 °C to 3 °C. Frost and ice formation near the summit are documented events. Long-term biological studies indicate that the cloud base is gradually rising due to regional atmospheric warming.

The initial hike from Timpohon Gate to Panalaban takes place on a well-maintained track with steps. Rain makes the track slippery but it rarely forces the closure of this lower section. The final ascent from Panalaban takes place on exposed steeply angled granite slabs at 2:30am. Sabah Parks rangers will abruptly and unconditionally close the summit gate during heavy rain or high winds due to the lethal risk of hypothermia and lightning strikes. Via Ferrata activities are similarly cancelled. Sabah Parks classifies these weather closures as Acts of God and no refunds are provided. Sabah Parks states that global climate change has made it more challenging to predict the ideal time.

October and November pose the highest statistical risk for summit gate closures. The period from February to April offers the lowest probability of rain but passing showers are common throughout the year.

Sipadan and the islands

Semporna records 2,342 mm of rain a year. December is the wettest month with about 224 mm across 15 rainy days. It rains in some form on around 278 days a year. March and April are the calmest and least wet. Sipadan's wall drops 600 m into open ocean so mainland rain rarely spoils the 40-metre underwater visibility. What the weather actually decides is the boat crossing. December and January carry the highest chance of a cancelled transfer due to heavy surface chop. Island resorts built on stilts stay open during downpours and you can enjoy their exposed sundecks between afternoon storms.

Sabah Parks issues 254 Sipadan permits a day. These are allocated through licensed resorts and operators. Advanced Open Water has been required since October 2022. Sipadan Island is closed every November and reopens 1 December. Snorkellers also need a permit. A Sipadan permit can be guaranteed with the right resort and dive package; the team confirms the nights that apply to your dates; which dates are available depends on the resort. Allow 24 hours between the last dive and a flight.

A mass bleaching event hit Sabah's reefs in mid-2024. Sea surface temperatures lingered near the 30.5 °C threshold. The shallow reef flats at Tun Sakaran and Mabul were heavily impacted. Sipadan's deeper walls demonstrated greater resilience due to cooler oceanic upwelling.

Further north in the Sulu Sea lies Lankayan Island. Lankayan Island Dive Resort is closed every January and February for the Northeast Monsoon. The prime turtle nesting season runs from June through September. In season, watching egg-laying and hatchling releases is a realistic target. The island experiences a whale shark migration window between March and May. Layang Layang is an isolated atoll situated deep in the South China Sea. It is renowned for scalloped hammerhead aggregations. Sea conditions set the season and the resort generally opens from March to August.

Green and peak travel seasons

The green season (roughly November–February) and the peak season (roughly March–October) offer a practical way to frame an east coast trip. The green season brings the heaviest rains to the Kinabatangan and Danum Valley. It turns logging tracks into deep mud in working reserves like Deramakot. It is the time for dedicated birders chasing wintering migrants.

The peak season brings lower river levels and clearer diving conditions. It also aligns with the highest international visitor demand. Lodges and transfers are busiest in July and August during the European and North American summer holidays. December and January bring massive secondary surges for the festive period despite these being the statistically wettest months on the east coast.

Wildlife lodges keep guest numbers down to reduce their impact on the forest. You must book 6 to 12 months in advance for the July and August peak. April and May offer the lowest international visitor numbers and represent the best opportunities for exclusivity.

January suits an east coast trip planned around heavy rain and higher river levels. February is a transition month with conditions improving rapidly. March is the true start of the optimal wildlife season for eastern Sabah. April is statistically the quietest month for international arrivals and offers some of the best weather. May conditions remain stellar across the board. June sees rising demand and excellent canopy walk conditions. July brings the highest visitor demand. August continues peak environmental conditions and peak crowds. September offers excellent value as crowds begin to thin. October is a gamble month suited for flexible itineraries. November brings heavy rains to the interior and Sipadan is closed. December sees massive demand spikes despite being the height of the Northeast Monsoon.

Fruiting trees and forest trails

The weather shapes how you get around and what you do each day. Rain restricts physical access in terrestrial reserves. Torrential downpours make steep trails hazardous and force the temporary closure of canopy walkways for safety. Mud on unpaved logging tracks reduces how much ground you can cover on a night drive.

Fruiting cycles govern primate sightings. Bornean dipterocarp forests have mass fruiting events at irregular intervals of 2 to 10 years. These events are heavily linked to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation. During a mast year a vast majority of tree species fruit in synchronised bursts. The eastern Bornean orangutan changes how it spends the day to make the most of the abundant fruit. Orangutans gorge almost exclusively on fruit and become highly active in the canopy. During standard inter-mast periods the overall fruit availability crashes. The apes rest more and rely on less nutritious fallback foods such as bark and liana leaves. Good orangutan watching depends on finding individual fig trees in fruit rather than choosing a calendar month. Guides locate orangutans by tracking the fruiting status of individual trees in their sector.

Daily weather shapes when you hear the forest's calls. Bornean gibbons are renowned morning singers. Passive acoustic monitoring studies in Danum Valley show that the presence and amount of rainfall during the preceding night reliably delays the start of male morning solos by up to 30 minutes. Heavy rain actively suppresses the calling behaviour of Great Argus pheasants regardless of the time of year. SEARRP data indicates that extended drought periods driven by severe El Nino events lead to rapid desiccation of the forest floor. The drying power of air during these anomalies severely reduces arthropod biomass within days.

The birding calendar follows migrant arrivals and resident breeding. The northern winter drives passage migrants to Sabah roughly from September through April.
