Sabah protects some of the oldest rainforest on Earth and the species within it. This guide explains the standards we hold for guides and what we ask of you in the forest and on the reef.

The short version

The 438-square-kilometre Danum Valley Conservation Area enforces strict environmental laws to protect vulnerable primates from human disease. Getting close to wildlife is tempting but distance is the foundation of responsible watching. For Bornean orangutans distance is a matter of life and death. Because great apes share our biology they are highly susceptible to human respiratory illnesses. A simple cold can spread rapidly through a population. The guides keep a strict distance from primates to prevent disease transmission and to allow the animals to forage naturally. In the selectively logged forests of Ulu Segama and Malua aerial surveys prove that orangutans adapt and thrive in secondary forests if they are left in peace. Standing back means you get to watch them build nests and feed without disrupting their day. Proper field craft uses good optics like an 8×42 binocular. An 8×42 optic delivers a wider column of light into the eye than a 10×42 binocular. This makes it perform well in the dark understory and brings the animal closer without crossing the physical distance.

A wild animal that learns to approach humans for food stops performing its natural ecological role such as dispersing seeds or hunting pests. The dipterocarp trees use a mass flowering event triggered by a drop in nighttime temperatures to drop millions of seeds and satiate predators naturally. The team does not support feeding wildlife under any circumstances and the guides will ask you to keep all snacks sealed in your bag while on the trail.

Red light and thermal optics

Night drives are when Sabah's forests come alive but the way you use light matters. The slow loris and the western tarsier have highly sensitive vision. A tarsier lacks a tapetum lucidum entirely and has evolved eyes physically larger than its brain to capture light. A civet or a flying squirrel uses a tapetum lucidum behind its retina to retroreflect photons. Shining a bright white light directly into their eyes causes retinal bleaching and disorientation.

To protect their vision, the team's field standard calls for deep-red light (660 nm). Strepsirrhine primates like the slow loris lack the opsin genes needed to perceive deep-red light as a bright colour. It is less disturbing than white light but they can still detect the source. Guides use a co-axial flashlight technique. They hold the light at the temple or bridge of the nose to precisely catch the eyeshine retroreflection. Operators also use handheld thermal imaging to scan the high canopy edge or the riverbanks. Thermal optics are strictly for locating an animal silently. The team's ethical rule is that an animal found with thermal imaging is never subsequently blasted with high-intensity white light for a photograph.

Acoustic monitoring and natural calls

Birders often use audio playback to draw elusive species into the open but playing a territorial call stresses the bird. It forces the animal to abandon its foraging or nesting duties to defend its territory against a phantom rival. During the critical breeding season this wasted energy can cause a nest to fail. While researchers at the Danum Valley Study Centre occasionally use playback, the team's position is that it should be kept to a minimum and never used repeatedly for the same individual. Waiting quietly for a Bornean bristlehead to cross the canopy is a better reward than tricking it into view. Good field craft starts with listening. A good guide listens for the heavy wingbeats of a rhinoceros hornbill leaving its roost rather than forcing it to react.

Fruiting fig trees and hides

Hides allow photographers to sit quietly and wait for an animal to approach naturally without the stress of human pursuit. The team's position on baiting at these hides is to favour observation without intervention. Using food to lure an animal to a specific spot disrupts its natural foraging pattern and habituates it to a specific location. The best sightings happen when you understand the environment. You might wait near a fruiting fig tree. You might recognise the fresh rooting churn of a bearded pig in the soil. You could observe the forest floor after a heavy afternoon rain when subterranean termite alates emerge and trigger a frantic feeding response.

The Bukit Atur observation tower

The canopy of the lowland dipterocarp forest is a complex habitat and drones cause significant distress to the animals living there. The noise and the physical presence of a drone mimic birds of prey. This causes panic among primates and canopy birds like the hornbills. Drones are strictly prohibited in the Danum Valley Conservation Area and most protected reserves across Sabah without a specific scientific permit from the Sabah Biodiversity Centre. If you want to see the canopy from above, the 100-metre Bukit Atur tower or the walkway at Borneo Rainforest Lodge puts you in the trees without disturbing the wildlife.

Helmeted hornbill and coral products

Wildlife crime is a real threat to Borneo's biodiversity and souvenir markets can sometimes hide illicit goods. The helmeted hornbill is Critically Endangered globally and listed under Schedule 1 (Totally Protected Species) of the Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997. It is hunted relentlessly for its solid keratin casque often sold as 'red ivory'. Never buy any product made from wildlife parts. This includes hornbill ivory, pangolin scales, marine turtle shells and coral. Purchasing these items drives poaching. Poachers use old logging roads to push deep into the forest interior. Supporting local artisans who work with sustainable wood or textiles is the best way to contribute to the local economy without harming the ecosystem.

The Sipadan Island coral flats

A single piece of plastic can remain in the ocean for decades. It damages reefs and harms marine life. In mid-2024 a mass bleaching event affected the shallow flats at Tun Sakaran and Mabul. This highlights the fragility of the marine ecosystem. Sabah Parks issues 254 Sipadan permits a day to control the number of divers and limit physical damage to the reef. When you visit the islands, take all your plastic waste back to the mainland with you. Do not touch the coral. Maintain excellent buoyancy while diving and use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the waters.

Selecting the right operator ensures your money supports legitimate conservation and local employment. A licensed Malaysian travel agency and tour operator must hold a valid MOTAC licence. Look for operators who are transparent about their practices and who employ local Sabahans as guides. The best operators explain which animals are resident and which are seen with luck. A good guide knows that falling barometric pressure before a storm triggers frantic foraging in insectivorous birds and plans walks around the day's heat and rain. A typical day starts at dawn when still air carries the Bornean gibbon's morning chorus furthest. By midday the heat quietens the birds and cicadas dominate the soundscape. Guides plan a rest during the hottest part of the day. They position you for the 4pm post-rain flush when the temperature drops and the animals become active again.

Your lodge management team

If you see a guide acting irresponsibly, whether by chasing an animal, feeding wildlife or using excessive white light on a tarsier, say something in the moment if you feel safe doing so. A polite reminder is often enough. If the behaviour continues, take note of the location, the time and the operator's details and report it to your lodge manager or directly to the team. The team expects a high standard of field craft and relies on guests to help maintain it.
